Mission Beach History
Mission Beach was originally designed as a beach resort community.
The original plans for Mission Beach were drawn up in the 1914-1920 time
frame before cars were real popular. This is why most of the area is best
traveled by foot
or by bike, roller blades. etc.
The courts were all named after other beaches around the country
and the"places" where cars have access to the alley or"Strandway Ct.," were all named after
the Catholic Missions which run from Baja California all the way to Santa Barbara.
In the early 1920's Mission Beach began seeing some serious development by
business tycoon
John D. Spreckels, who had made a small fortune in the
sugar cane business.
Spreckels ran a new trolley line into Mission Beach from downtown
while at the same time
building "The Mission Beach Amusement Center",
now called "Belmont Park". The amusement park boasted having the largest
salt water pool, a beachfront roller coaster and all the state of the art rides for that time.
The year was 1925 and lots in Mission Beach began to sell new lots and homes.
In the early 1900's Mission Beach was mainly a tent city until about 1919
when the city zoned Mission Beach into 25' x 50' lots and began to sell them.
Mission Beach today is still much the same way that John Spreckels would have imagined.
Despite going into disrepair during the 70' and a portion of the 80's Mission Beach and Belmont
Park have never been better places to visit.
Mission Beach Today
Thanks to pioneers like Tom Lochenfeld, who has personally rebuilt Belmont Park and added some of the best rides and attractions it has ever seen, Mission Beach again is a vibrant source of the San Diego and on the cutting edge of beach entertainment venues.
community and by far THE BEST BEACH in San Diego, Southern California and well beyond.
make sure you check out the 10' man made wave machine at The Wave House
or take a ride on the 2nd oldest wooden roller coaster in the country "The Giant Dipper"
With all of this and over 4,000 acres of parks and wetlands surrounding the area on Mission Bay, it is no wonder Mission Beach is one of the most fun and scenic beaches in the world!
